The launch marks a decisive step in the block’s redevelopment strategy and a concrete boost to Angola’s national oil production.

The Jack-Up rig arrived in Soyo on June 25 and began operations on June 27, initiating an intensive drilling campaign that includes the drilling of three development wells, one exploration well, and five workovers in existing wells.

The project is being carried out by Etu Energias, the block’s operator, in partnership with Poliedro, Kotoil, Falcon Oil, and Prodoil. The campaign is aligned with the minimum work commitment agreed upon with Angolan authorities and is a key component of the broader strategy to increase production and unlock value from Block 2/05.

“The arrival and commissioning of the SMS rig represent a strategic investment in boosting Angola’s national crude oil production. This milestone reaffirms the growing technical and financial capacity of Etu Energias and its partners, and shows we are increasingly prepared to generate value and face the sector’s challenges with confidence,” said Edson R. Dos Santos, Chairman of the Board of Etu Energias.

Technology Driving Productivity

Built in 2020 at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry shipyards, the SMS ESSA rig is a modern unit equipped to operate in water depths of up to 30 meters. Classified as “fit for purpose,” the rig boasts high-performance technical capabilities that ensure efficient and safe operations.

The project is expected to make a significant contribution to boosting production at Block 2/05 and to strengthen Etu Energias’ position as a leading Angolan operator, with direct impact on national energy security and economic returns for all stakeholders.

Community Support and Traditional Blessings

The start of operations was marked by a symbolic blessing ceremony conducted by local sobas (traditional leaders) of the Soyo region. The sobas expressed their support for the project and offered wishes of success for the drilling campaign. This moment reinforced the respectful and cooperative relationship between Etu Energias and the surrounding communities.

With this operational launch, Etu Energias continues to honor its commitment to sustainable energy production, contributing to Angola’s development under the values that have defined its 25-year journey: Angolan Identity, Strength, and Resilience.
